The Blackanese
The Blackanese Sushi and Wine bar is a buzzing little sushi bar located in the heart of the trendy Maboneng Precinctin downtown Johannesburg.
The Blackanese was opened by local entrepreneur Vusi Kunene, who started out with a mobile sushi business that he would set up at weekend markets and events. While selling his sushi from a stall at Maboneng’s Market on Main, Kunene met local property developer Jonathan Liebmann, who offered him a space to open his restaurant and bar.
Today The Blackanese is one of the best-known businesses in the area and has even been featured in the New York Times.
On the menu is a unique spin on Japanese sushi that fuses together African and Asian flavours such as biltong and curry spices. The Blackanese also does a seafood braai (barbecue) every Sunday, which features delicious Mozambican spiced prawns and fresh grilled fish served with fragrant Thai rice and a choice of sauces.
To get a taste of a bit of everything it’s a good idea to come with a group of friends and order one of the very reasonably priced sushi platters to share. If you would like to learn how to make your own sushi, Kunene also leads sushi making classes.
Come experience the tranquil Zen atmosphere where you can enjoy colourful authentic Japanese Sushi served with a variety of South African sparkling wines.
